Lawyers acting for people injured by hairdressers have called for regulation of the industry to help prevent personal injury claims.

Currently hairdressers can voluntarily register with the Hairdressing Council. However, fewer than 10% of the 130,000 hairdressers in the UK are members.

APIL (Association of Personal Injury Lawyers) together with industry bodies have said that checks would help prevent scalp damage, baldness and burns.

The government says that it does not want to add to the regulatory burden and current measures are sufficient.
