Frenkels Forensics Hosts Seminar To Illustrate Role And Importance Of Forensic Accounting In Criminal MattersAccording to a recent report by a City law firm, the number of financial crimes in the past year has doubled to around 230,000. Within these cases – often involving fraud or money laundering – forensic accounting is being called upon to play an increasingly important role.

With this in mind, Frenkels Forensics recently held an event on ‘Optimising Results In Criminal and Fraud Cases – Working with Advocates and Experts’. It was hosted at the Charing Cross Hotel in London on 10 September and was co-presented by John Frenkel, senior partner of Frenkels Forensics, David Etherington QC of Red Lion Chambers, and chaired by the well-known TV broadcaster and journalist Clive Coleman.

With a huge number of crimes carrying financial ramifications for businesses or individuals, it is extremely important to have experts on hand to assess quantum matters – that is to say, establish the exact monetary values associated with the criminal act. It is, therefore, essential that a business or individual appoints the right expert for their case, and this was the focus of speaker David Etherington QC.

The event, which was well attended by solicitors and barristers specialising in criminal proceedings and fraud investigations, examined the following topics: why choosing an expert should not be based on cost alone; the importance of experts’ skills in the courtroom setting as well as on the subject matter; the importance of forming a clear understanding between the expert and legal team; and the dos and don’ts of instructing an expert in criminal matters.

Of course, as a firm specialised in all areas of forensic accountancy, Frenkels Forensics was well placed to shed light on these key issues. From choosing the right team of experts through to understanding their duties and role in proceedings, the interactive seminar enabled attendees to appreciate the true value of forensic accounting within criminal cases.
